Team REVIVE complete the Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo!

An exceptional team of ten riders made up of ex-patients, relatives, friends and members of staff from the Regional Intensive Care Unit completed in the Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo, Northern Ireland. The event which took place on Sunday the 21st June challenged the team over the two courses; along Strangford lough and around the Mourne Mountains.

We were delighted that Mark, Sam, Conor and Barry made the trip from England just to join the REVIVE team and amazingly the guys were back at work on Monday!

The team were particularly honoured that Mark McKee joined them on the ride.  Mark had a serious cycling accident which left him paralysed down one side and in a coma. He spent 10 days in the Royal Victoria Hospital Intensive Care Unit before being moved to the Regional Acquired Brain Injury Unit (RABIU) in Musgrave Park for rehabilitation. Mark had not cycled since his accident and decided along with his father, Colin to compete in the 57km part of the Grand Fondo.

The atmosphere on the day was electric and for the most part the weather was kind allowing us to enjoy County Down’s amazing scenery.  The event was extremely well organised and the team enjoyed riding in the safety of closed roads. The silence during the long climb up to Spelga Dam was almost worth the effort to get there, almost.

Mark and the rest of the team would like to thank everyone for their support leading up to the event and those who supported us on the day. This was just incredible and really helped us manage those last 25 miles in the wind and rain.

Of course we would all like to thank those people who generously helped raise funds in support of REVIVE, the charity for the Royal Victoria Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Thank You to all the riders who put in the long hours of hard work to get ready for this event and raising funds. Bring on Grand Fondo 2016!
